Be Our Guest: A Blog About Crisps
Be Our Guest A Blog About Crisps
(Date:16 May 2011)
Be our guest is always an interesting time here, in the Mylunch offices. It’s a rare time, when, we take a brief break from finding you the best lunch time spots and offers, and let someone else do the talking (for a change). This time we have an interesting character by the name of Mark, who has a very interesting perspective on the (not-so) ordinary lunchtime packet of crisps!
Mark (and crew) run a blog called “A Blog about Crisps” which is solely dedicated to taste-testing and reviewing crisps the world and supermarket over. If you have never given your crisps much appreciation, maybe this might change your perspective. (Click here to read his blog).
So Mark, can you tell us a little bit more about what you do?
I write for “A Blog about Crisps” which is exactly what is says on the tin: it’s a blog, about crisps! Our mantra is to ‘review as many types of crisps as possible, or die from doing so.’ It’s quite a simple premise really. We review crisps – all day, every day. So much so, that we’re setting up a campaign called “Crispmas Day” on June 25th to celebrate the birth of the bloke on the packet of Wheelies (Mr Tayto’s son, apparently). The festivities will include buying that special someone a bag of their favourite crisps. It is both delicious and thoughtful.
Interesting concept there Mark, you’ll have to let us know how it goes. Can you tell us what you think about lunch?![]()
In my opinion, lunch is by far the best deal of the day. My reason is that lunch can be whatever you want; a late breakfast, an early dinner or that old classic that is the sandwich. It really depends on personal choice, your plan for the day and whether you were out the night before (bitta soakage anyone?)
A little known fact is that, scientifically, you are at your most possible hungriest 15 minutes before lunch hour. That’s science, by the way, I haven’t just made that up…
As a dedicated crisp obsessive, my main concern is the lunch selection and crisp combination. Will the flavor of the crisps we choose compliment our lunch? Often, the big meaty flavors are shelved in favor of the classic cheese and onion. At “A blog About Crisps” we are concerned with deep spiritual questions like what flavor to choose and where to buy them.
Wow, we never thought about it like that. What is your perfect lunch?
For me, the perfect lunch is nice and simple: a ham sandwich, big bag of crisps and a cup of tea. However, if I’m feeling flush I will splash out for a Cappuccino. Now, you may think that that sounds like quite a plain lunch, but not at Simon’s Place. Simon’s Place is in George’s St Arcade and the sandwiches are simply legendary. I’m a big fan of their crisp selection as well: King Luxury.
King Luxury are a truly a splendid munch. These lads are a bit more than your average C&O (cheese and onion) flavour. These crisps are literally real luxury crisps with a strong flavor and crisp texture. Combine my favourite crisps with the best sambos in Dublin and you are on to a winner! If you are feeling pretty flash with the cash you can splash out and buy a delicious cinnamon Danish pastry. They won’t let you down.
One of the most enticing things about Simon’s is the friendly, relaxed environment. Feel free to cosy up in a quiet spot and enjoy some peaceful and interesting moments of ‘people watching’, one of my favourite pastimes.
Lunch is truly my favorite meal of the day. No matter what sandwich you choose, don’t forget to appreciate the bag of crisps that accompany it. Crisps are sort of like the assistant football manager of the lunch hour: they do a lot of the back room duties, don’t ask for much attention and get along with everyone. That is why we love them.
Well, lunch is defiantly our favourite meal too. Thank you very much, Mark, for sharing your interesting insight into the world of crisp appreciation.
