Street Food in Dublin no longer resembles a greasy burger bought from some even more greasy electric motor powered chipper van, after a 4a.m. pint in Coppers!
Like it, or not if you prefer grease, we've moved on dramatically from there, and there are now a multitude of market options, and great food purveyors around the city.
Well, as with all things in life, some of these street food purveyors serve up better quality grub than others, and so, the Dublin Street Food Awards have been set up to praise these!
Backed by The Dubliner Magazine, the awards are your chance to celebrate the people who get up at the crack of dawn to shake, bake, stir and pour the lovely delicacies and hearty feasts that add to everyone’s day. These cuisine crusaders are mainstays now, at festivals big and small, sporting occasions, farmers markets, Christmas fairs and lunchtime pop up vendors, so let's let them know we appreciate the eh?!
A panel of esteemed judges from the food industry have been invited to nominate a shortlist of the best offerings in each of the following categories:
Best Savoury Dish
Best Dessert
Best Hot/Cold Beverage
Best Looking Unit
The short-list of traders in each category will be invited to gather for an epic on-street cook-off in a Dublin city centre location in August, with one winner will be announced from each category and a Judge’s Overall Award too.
The ravenous public is also invited to nominate their favourite food-to-go hero, and the vendor with the most public votes will be awarded the People’s Taste Award. All are welcome to nominate and can do so by heading here, where you can tell us about your favourite choice and why you think they deserve the People’s Taste Award 2011. The People’s Taste Award will be also presented at the on-street cook-off in August.
We at mylunch did some scouting last Friday at the Fitzwilliam Square Lunch Market, (pictured right) and we can assure you, the quality was amazing! (Vennison skewers went down very well! #nyom)
So, if you've a favourite local vendor, get nominating, and watch out for the likes of Kanum who will be hoping to steal a prize or two!
